Following upsurge in reported cases of kidnappings, the Ona of Abaji and Chairman of the FCT council of chiefs, His Royal Majesty (HRM) Alhaji Adamu Baba Yunusa, has summoned traditional chiefs as well as community leaders for an emergency security meeting in his palace.
Alhaji Adamu, while speaking during the meeting yesterday, said it had become necessary to meet and look for solutions to end the kidnappings.
The paramount ruler, as part of resolutions of the meeting, urged the traditional chiefs and community leaders to set up vigilante groups in their respective communities so that they would work closely with relevant security agencies to tame the spate of kidnappings in the area.
Yunusa said intelligence sharing between vigilantes and conventional security agencies would help in tracking the criminals.
“I want to call on all the village heads and community leaders here in this palace that they should select capable people that will join the vigilante group and you should ensure that they are screened before they will start work, ” he said.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the council, Alhaji Abdulrahman Ajiya, represented by the council’s secretary, Alhaji Kamal Adamu Shuaibu, commended the traditional ruler for summoning the emergency security meeting.
He said the council has donated three operational vehicles to members of the vigilante group for patrol in the area in order to checkmate activities of armed bandits.
The chairman said the council would also provide torchlights, whistles to the vigilante, adding that the council would furher support the vigilante with monthly salary in order to boost their morale in the course of discharging their duties.
